"够 gòu"

"够 gòu" is the English equivalent of "enough" or "sufficient". It is generally used in four different ways.


"noun + 够" (English equivalent = "enough + noun")

(Question forms)

他们的钱够不够? 他们的钱够吗?

Tāmende qián gòu bù gòu? Tāmende qián gòu ma?

Do they have enough money?

(Answer/Statement forms)

他们的钱够了。 他们的钱不够。

Tāmende qián gòu le. Tāmende qián bù gòu.

They have enough money. They don't have enough money.



"够 + Adjective" (English equivalent = "Adjective + enough")

(Question forms)

他说的普通话够好了吗? 他说的普通话够不够好? 他手的普通话够好没(有)?

Tā shuōde pǔtōnghuà gòu hǎo le ma? Tā shuōde pǔtōnghuà gòu bù gòu hǎo? Tā shuōde pǔtōnghuà gòu hǎo méi(yŏu)?

Does he speak Mandarin well enough?

(Answer/Statement forms)

她说的普通话够好了。 她说的普通话不够好。

Tā shuōde pǔtōnghuà gòu hǎo le. Tā shuōde pǔtōnghuà bù gòu hǎo.

She speaks Mandarin well enough. She doesn't speak Mandarin well enough.



"够 + Verb" (English equivalent = "enough to + Verb")

(Question forms)

钱够买一本书吗? 钱够不够买一本书? 钱够买一本书没有?

Qián gòu mǎi yī běn shū ma? Qián gòu bù gòu mǎi yī běn shū? Qián gòu mǎi yī běn shū méi(yŏu)?

Is the money enough to buy a book?

(Answer/Statement forms)

钱够买一本书。 钱不够买一本书。

Qián gòu mǎi yī běn shū. Qián bù gòu mǎi yī běn shū.

The money is enough to buy a book. The money isn't enough to buy a book.



"Verb + 够" (English equivalent = "Verb + enough")

(Question forms)

这鞋菜你吃够了吗? 这些菜你吃够了没(有)

Zhèi xiē cài nǐ chī gòu le ma? Zhèi xiē cài nǐ chī gòu le mei(you)?

Do/did you eat enough of these vegetables?

(Answer/Statement forms)

这些菜我吃够了。 这些菜我没吃够了。 这些菜我不吃够。

Zhèi xiē cài wǒ chī gòu le. Zhèi xiē cài wǒ méi chī gòu le.

I ate enough of these vegetables. I didn't eat enough of these vegetables.
