At just around 100 years old Dalian is, by Chinese standards, a very young city. After going through a violent birth racked by war with the Japanese and Russians and then a period of stagnation under the old communist rule the city was opened up to foreign investment in 1984. Thus began a creation of a city that is now a model of redevelopment in China, a city of parks and open spaces with a modern focus on tourism and commerce. An energetic and dynamic city, Dalian has transformed itself into a northern powerhouse.
Being smaller than many cities in China; along with the environmental policies of local government, Dalian is generally recognised as one of the cleanest cities in China. Comparatively blue skies are the norm and clean streets are the sign of an army of Chinese street cleaners that work day and night. With a smaller population Dalian has been able to remain a quiet and relaxed city where the Chinese locals are still able to enjoy the many beautiful beaches and developed a sense of community where there is always someone you can talk to.
Cities in the north-east provinces of China are generally accepted as speaking what is very close to standard Mandarin Chinese and Dalian people are no exception. As well there is a general lack of English speakers when compared to cities like Beijing or Shanghai.
