The Difference Between Chinese and American Education

1. Introduction引言

It is obvious that different contexts have different cultures. It is also true for education in different countries. This essay will explore the difference between Chinese and American education, and it mainly makes comparison in the aspects of education system and teaching style in these two countries.

很明显,不同的语境有不同的文化。不同国家的教育也是如此。本文将探讨中美教育的差异,主要从教育体制和教学方式两个方面进行比较。

2. Education system in China and the U.S.

The education system in two countries both includes the compulsory education and higher education.

The following text in this part mainly gives details of compulsory education system in two countries respectively, which is more significant and meaningful when comparing the education system between two countries.

First of all, as for education system in China, Fang (2016) summarized it as “China provides its citizens a diverse school system: public schools for students of all ages, specialized schools for the disabled, private schools and vocational schools among the many other institutions for education.” Students in China are required to finish 9 years of education, which we call it as ‘nine years compulsory education’ including 6 years in primary school and 3 years in secondary school. During the compulsory period, students need not pay tuition fees but the fees of course books and essential teaching aids. After completing the compulsory schooling, students have rights to choose their career in the future. They can continue their education in normal high school or vocational school by passing high school entrance examination. Accordingly, they can also choose to end their studying career and get a job after secondary school. However, in contemporary society, junior diploma can not satisfy the needs of society, so the majority of junior graduates choose to pursue a higher degree. Students have opportunities to attend university by passing the University Entrance Examination after 3 years’ studying in high school, or they can choose to find a job by passing the Graduation Examination just after 2 years’ studying.

However, compulsory education in America is quite different from that in China. According to State Compulsory School Attendance Laws available at InfoPlease (2007) students should start their schooling at the age between 5 to 8 and end their studying until at least 16 to 18. American compulsory education is not as complicated as China’s. it is divided into four levels, including kindergarten (1 year), elementary school (6 years), middle/junior high school (2 years) and senior high school (4 years), and the tuition fees is free to all American citizens during 13 years compulsory education. In addition to the one year’s kindergarten, the grades are set up according to Children’s age ranging from 1st grade until up to twelfth grade, the final year of high school. American students can pursue higher studying in the university/college by passing SAT or ACT, or they can also attend junior college merely after getting high school diploma without attending an entrance examination. Some of American senior high school graduates can also choose to find a job rather than continue their studying.

3. Teaching style in China and the U.S.

As for the teaching style in Chine, we use a phrase to conclude Chinese traditional teaching and learning pattern, it is ‘examination oriented’.There was a BBC documentary called ’Chinese schooling’ released in 2015 and it reflected the teaching style in China quite vividly. The documentary showed that five Chinese teachers gave the nine-year British students Math, Science, Mandarin and PE classes using fluent English but in a Chinese way. For example, in PE class, the British students were required to wear tracksuits just the same as Chinese students do, doing exercises together and attending flag-raising ceremony under teacher’s supervision. For some programs indoors, such as Math, Mandarin and Science, teachers stood in the front, writing the board, board-writing seems to be a great artifact which includes all key information after the whole class. You can hear the phrases like ‘Be quiet!’ ‘Read after me’ and ‘Use your brain’ repeatedly during the class to keep order. Students sat in fixed position, had their fixed desk-mates and could not change the position without teachers’ permission. The teachers in Chinese classes played a role as an authority but not a participate, the pattern of education is teacher-centered but not student-centered. The purpose of these all activities was to improve students’ examination grades.

However, the teaching style in the U.S is totally different from that in China. According to Wang (2012), in American classes, it is harder and harder to find where the teacher is. in the past, American teachers used to be the authority standing in the center of students just like Chinese teachers did. But nowadays, students are leading roles, group work and other interesting activities takes most of class time. However, teacher just sit in a corner and give some assistance if necessary, as well as give a conclusion at the end of the class. students talk anything as free as they like, there is no absolutely ‘right or wrong’ in American class provided their saying stands to reason. it is not hard to see that American class is student-centered, the role of teachers is no more an authority but a participate and assistant. The purpose of education is to improve students’ ability to critical thinking and encourage students to be knowledgeable in all aspects. Getting good grades is never the major character of education.

4. Conclusion结论

To sum up, Chinese education is quite different American education. First of all, as for the education system, especially the compulsory education, the American students can enjoy 4 years more free education than Chinese students. Secondly, as for the teaching style, Chinese education is teacher-centered, teachers play a role of authority but not a participate, the purpose of teaching is to improve students examination results. By contrast, American class is student-centered, the role of teachers is no more an authority but a participate and assistant. The purpose of education is to improve students’ ability to critical thinking and encourage students to be knowledgeable in all aspects.
