This article will discuss an anti-war poem named“There Will Come Soft Rains”by Sara Teasdale,the modern American poet.This 12-line poem which has been published in the July 1918 issue of Harper’s Magazine.The poem shows Teasdale’s focus on philosophy and social themes.The creation of this poem derives directly from the spiritual disillusionment that Teasdale faces the destruction made by the First World War to human beings.

Robin feathers are a kind of prediction because fire is part of the war.The purpose of the phrase“feathery fire”(Harper’s Magazine,vol.CXXXVII,p.238,line 5)is to describe the beauty and harmony of nature contrasting with the scenes of terror.The sixth line of the poem reinforces the description of the animals’joy and indifference when humans are in chaos.Robins sit on the fence and whistle because they have not the same fears as humans.

The first six lines of the poem describe the livelihood of the birds and frogs.But the idyllic scene is used to pave the way for the sadness of the latter half and the narration of the absurd and disorderly behavior of human beings.Whether animals or wild plum trees will not become victims of human violence,because they can keep away from the war.
