Guangzhou Camp Overview
Guangzhou is not only the capital city of Guangdong province but also one of the economic and cultural capitals of south China. With a history of hundred s of years, Guangzhou has established itself as the Southern Gate to China. Since being the start of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, to the opening of its doors in 1511 to Portuguese traders and until today, where it remains a hub of Chinese global trade and commerce; Guangzhou has, throughout its history, been an international metropolis at the centre of trade and cultural crossroads. As the major entry point for overseas culture for many centuries, foreigners are not the anomaly here that they are in other Chinese cities.
Although Guangzhou may have lost some of its historical status since the opening up of China and the resulting increase in competition from other mainland cities, it continues to develop and expand at a rapid pace. On one hand recognized as one of China's most prosperous, liberal, and cosmopolitan cities, at the forefront of trade, fashion and nightlife; Guangzhou is, on the other hand, the old Guangzhou of traditional neighbourhoods that still move at an age-old pace, with families and friends often sitting outdoors enjoying tea and games. This has resulted in a reputation of being a more laid back city.
Guangzhou is at the heart of Guangdong province and 70% of residents were born there, meaning that the majority of people speak native Cantonese. The Guangzhou dialect is the most widespread Cantonese dialect in the world and in fact is usually just called “Cantonese”. It is the lingua franca of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and all Cantonese speakers throughout the world. By studying Cantonese in Guangzhou you are immersing yourself in a standard Cantonese environment in a world class city.
