"The great Gatsby" is one of the best and most influential works of Fitzgerald, which has a high reputation in the world literature. The main character of the novel is Gatsby, the western poor children believe that he can realize his American dreams through wealth and recapture his lost love, but he did not win back his love with his accumulated wealth through moonshining business and even take himself into a twisted path of death. Gatsby has become the representative figures in the study of the American dream of scholars. And this novel is criticism on the American dream at that era. Based on the novel, this essay briefly introduces the meaning of American dream, and then the essay analyzes how the author indict the deterioration of the American dream through Gatsby's experience on the love and material, so as to make people realize that the excessive pursuit of material is the root cause of the distortion of the American dream.

The American dream is reflected by the love and wealth of the dream of Gatsby in the story of the great Gatsby. Gatsby was born in a poor family, when serving in the army; he met and fell in love with the rich daisy. Daisy is dream of love of the poor young people. although the vain Daisy love Gatsby, due to the huge social status disparity, she finally married Tom Buchanan who has both money and position .The couple lived in a rich but emptiness and dissolute life, which makes Gatsby realize that if he has enough money he could recapture the daisy. However, Gatsby's love dream is full illusory color. Daisy’ life target is involved in hedonism, false, and vanity, it is simply impossible to sacrifice her interests for Gatsby. In the analysis of Gatsby's dream of love, the author uses lots of color to show that the dream is illusory. Daisy ‘face, clothing and house curtains are all white. “She was just eighteen, two years older than me, and by far the most popular of all the young girls in Louisville dressed in white, and had a little white car…” (Fitzgerald, 2003: 98).On the surface, white is innocence, but in essence, White symbolizes emptiness indifference and no intrinsic meaning, which show the nature behind Daisy ‘innocent appearance. “She’s got an indiscreet voice” I remarked “it is full of----”I hesitated.“Her voice is full of money” Gatsby said suddenly. (Fitzgerald, 2003: 36).Indeed, those Personalities of Daisy puts Gatsby toward abyss step by step. Finally, Gatsby never wake up from illusory dreams of love at the last moment of her life. The innocent Daisy in appearance and Tom murdered Gatsby with conspiracy. Gatsby’ tragedy is that he believes he can buy his dream with money, and in fact his money proved to be invalid. Gatsby and Tom respectively represent the two major forces in American Society: extremely romantic idealism and selfish materialism. The author makes a metaphor in the materialistic world, When the spiritual pursuit represented by Gatsby fights with huge material wealth represented by Tom, the spiritual pursuit power is so pale and weak, therefore, Tom is the indirect cause of Gatsby's death in the novel.

Gatsby suffered from the failure in the dream of love because of the lack of wealth. He finally realized that the importance of money, Gatsby even realize the dream of love should be established on the foundation the dream of money. After He got rich by devious means, he buy a grand house besides Daisy’ house, and gives dinner parties with the best food and wine, so as to attract the attention of former lover, daisy. Gatsby seems to realize the dream of money through illegal trade, but dreams does not bring his pride and a sense of security, which is why he rarely appeared in his mansion banquet guests, and keep a mysterious identity. The nature of Gatsby's dream of money is his pure and illusory dreams of love, but his dream of love is based on a illusory and wishful thinking.Gatsby even sacrifice and sell the moral bottom line and principles as the price for the pursuit of money. The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father’s business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end (Fitzgerald, 2003:125-133).Therefore, in fact Gatsby ‘huge wealth does not bring the feeling of satisfaction and achievement that he has expected, he became empty, hope that one day Daisy can return because of his wealth. Later with the help of Nick, Gatsby meets Daisy, but when Daisy learned that Gatsby's wealth is illegal income, she is afraid of losing money and hang by a thread, the sense of security and status, she does not want to leave Tom. During the intense ideological struggle, Daisy drives accidentally and kills Tom’ mistress Myrtle. Tom and Daisy plots and puts the blame on Gatsby, so Wilson shot Gatsby. The Author gives profound sympathy of the protagonist Gatsby who completely rely on individual effort to struggle up from the bottom of society. His personalities including perseverance, indomitable courage, his struggle, makes him finally win the economic great success, into the social upper. This seems to confirm the America dream. "Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social classor circumstances of birth " (Adams,1921,p3-5). Despite the illegal profits makes Gatsby become a millionaire, but no matter how Gatsby packaging himself, he is essentially a small figure from the bottom of the community, he cannot really integrate into the elite class. This profoundly indicts the hypocrisy of the American dream itself.
Conclusion
The novel shows the deep social crisis and the decays of people's values and moral concepts in Jazz Age; it is an indictment of confused emotions among youth and disillusion of the America dream. Gatsby believes that the American dream can be realized through wealth; in fact it is a contradiction between the reality and the ideal, as long as it can be achieved through the possession of the money. The author shows the American society style in the 1920s, indicts the money hedonism and vanity has dominated the whole society so as to make people realize that the excessive pursuit of material may destroys the American dream.
