● Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
● The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you and what did you learn from the experience?
● Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
● Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. 首先，无论选择哪个题目，我们都能受用的几个写作经验：
● 写关于你的真实的故事
我们在构想文章内容时，一定要经过认真地和深刻地思考，选择对你来说最重要的、最能代表你的故事或经历。
这个经历不一定要惊天动地，但一定要惊动过你的天地。
● Show, don’t tell!
这个句话是我的导师经常跟我讲的写作原则。它的意思是说，当你想表达一件事或一个观点，不要空口说白话，而是要说出你的行动来证明。比如，你想写你对计算机科学的兴趣，不要只写你感兴趣，还要写出你所做的跟计算机科学专业相关的事情（读杂志、上网络课程等）来证明/表现你的兴趣。
● 切忌大篇幅描述事件，要着重表现你的感受和成长
来找我们改文书的一些同学经常会把文章的80%用来描述一个事件的过程，确实为了让文章生动具体，避免成为流水账，大家洋洋洒洒的很快就能用完限定字数。
但招生官真正想看的是我们过程中所感所想和所收获的成长，但这个感想又不要太烂大街的肤浅，而是你真正的想法。所以，我们的文章既要完整清晰，也要深刻。
总之，先能深入你心的，才能深入人心。无论是故事经历的选择，还是对你的感受、经验教训和成长的描述上，我们都要花一段时间认真的冷静的思考再来动笔。所以建议大家在提交申请前一两个月就开始思考文书主题，留足够的时间来挖掘自己的故事。
在辅导学生文书的过程中我们的体会是，每个学生都有着自己非常独特和有趣的经历，比如决定从乐队退出时所经历的纠结，比如小小年纪申请美高和转学的大胆和坚持，再比如13年风雨无阻的游泳梦。
只要你耐心挖掘，同时也说给别人听听，你会发现，真的很有趣。
接下来，我们来看看每个主题的写作tips：
一篇文章走天下
首先，捷径是有的：
我们可以先从Common App 、Coalition 和UC App里选择一个相似的主题来完成文章（550字左右）。
然后把这篇文章缩写到350字以内作为UC App的四篇小短文之一，最后再完成UC App剩下的三个短文。
但如果你有充分的时间准备申请，并且想多通过写文书来了解自己，也可以选择不同的主题 。
各类Personal Essay主题如何写？
● 克服困难、个人成长类：Common 2和5、Coalition 1，UC 4和5
这一类题目是要求我们通过一段克服困难和挑战或面对失败的经历来表现我们的个性以及所收获的个人成长。
在文章中，我们要描写困境是什么，是什么让我们左右为难，我们又是如何思考清楚，做出正确的决定/选择。同时，也要清楚的表达自己的所学所感所想。
● 个人特色类：Common 1， UC 3
这类题目下，我们可以写自己的特殊背景或天赋，比如成长的环境、艺术或体育天赋等。这些特色要与你后来的生活和你性格的塑造紧密相关。
在文章中，我们要描述自己生活中这个特别的因素，也要告诉大家它对你的整个的个人发展所产生的影响。同时，也要写清自己的这项特点将如何影响以后的学业和事业。
● 信念改变、打破常规、创新类：Common 3，Coalition 3，UC 2
Common App的题目是要求我们写我们打破常规、挑战权威的经历。这可以是学术或日常生活中的创新或尝试、理论探讨等。
而Coalition的题目则是我们的信仰或想法被挑战的经历，比如学术知识、宗教信仰、你对公共问题的看法或对某个（些）人的看法因为某件事而发生改变等。

● 领导力、贡献利他类：Coalition 2， UC 1、7
这个主题是考察我们是否热心助人和有领导力。
文章中，我们要描述社区服务或领导他人的过程中所做的工作，所遇到的挑战或分歧，和自己努力克服挑战的过程，同时也要着重表现自己所收获的成长，和对这类活动和能力的认识。
● 给学弟学妹的建议：Coalition 4
这个主题其实考察的是我们在成长过程中大部分人都会学到的教训和积累的经验。
文章中，我们要写少年时期好的和坏的，以及在即将成年的我们回头看时，对自己经历的所学所想。
● 自由发挥：Common 7， Coalition 5，UC 8
