枪支

Gun violence and control has become a deep-rooted social problem in the United States. In recent years, mass shootings in schools outraged the public, leading to various social movements that oppose gun violence and support gun control. For example, the recent “March for Our Lives” campaign was initiated by students who have suffered from the devastations of gun violence. Despite these voices, the other side of the debate has profound cultural and constitutional support, arguing that gun rights are a fundamental part of civil rights. Represented by the NRA, they believe that it is the criminals and the violence cultural elements that are to be condemned, not the guns. Addressing the arguments from both sides of the debate, this research paper argues that unlimited gun rights is a violation of humanitarianism and stricter gun control policies should be enacted in the United States.

In the United States today, the number of privately-owned firearms has reached more than 300 million, and more than half of U.S. households have guns, and this number is growing every day (Goldberg). In the history of firearms development, the United States is an indispensable link. The history of development of guns is closely related to the history of the United States. Former President Obama said during a presidential debate in 2012: “We’ve got a long tradition of hunting and sportsmen and people who want to make sure they can protect themselves (Du and Yuan 378)”. At the same time, the development of firearms is also related to the open market economy in the United States. In the United States, as long as they comply with the law, many people can open companies and produce firearms. In the United States, there are over 200 gun companies, most are listed such as Sturm Ruger. These gun companies will pay a lot of taxes for the United States each year, and they will also create many job opportunities for local people (Presswire). Apparently, guns have become an integral part of the lives of many Americans and have become an important element of American culture. Under such circumstances, it is nearly impossible for a complete ban on fire arms in the country. Even gun control is met with great difficulties.

What is more serious is that some Americans believe that gun control will erode the integrity and sanctity of the Bill of Rights and thus pose a threat to other citizenship rights stipulated in the Constitution. In the American political culture, it is the supreme principle to maintain the authority and stability of the Constitution, and to protect individual rights. For this, the people will not compromise easily. In addition, although calls for strengthening gun control have been incessantly heard in American society in the past decades, in the past 200 years of history, the United States has never seen an amendment to the Second Amendment to the Constitution. The reason why such a situation may occur is that, on the one hand, the revision of the constitutional process in the United States is extremely complicated and rigid (Spitzer 60). On the other hand, it is also more important that it shows that most Americans agree with the principle established by the Second Amendment of the Constitution, that is, bearing fire arms is an important part of the freedom and rights of citizens.

Despite the cultural practices and the power of the Constitution, gun control is imperative given the current status of gun violence in the US, which is the most serious among developed countries. Firstly, defending a term from the Constitution written centuries ago as political correctness is unjustified. According to the Constitution, all human beings are born equal and that the government powers recognized and granted by people under government administration are legitimate government powers (Feldman 78). People establish governments in order to protect people's right to life, property, and the pursuit of happiness. When the government violates these goals, the people have the right and obligation to change or abolish the government and establish a new government based on the needs of the people. Then, how do people use rights to abolish the government that is against the will of the people? At the time, the constitution drafter believed that only the people had the right to hold guns to put this right into practice (Jones 101). However, it is questionable whether true freedom really require individual gun rights as a safeguard in the civilized society, especially when under-regulated gun rights are contributing to violence.

The political and economic motivations behind gun rights are revealing. In 1934, in response to the relevant discussion of the national gun law at that time, the National Rifle Association established a legislative affairs division, and gradually entered the political field (Medlock 39). The current U.S. rifle association is powerful and can even influence elections. The most recent example is that during the Obama administration, Obama used administrative orders to prohibit the sale of guns to people with mental illness. This very reasonable executive order was cancelled after Trump became POTUS (Korte). Many people think this is a deal between Trump and the NRA. The biggest appeal of the NRA is to protect the American people’s right to hold guns, but this appeal has been distorted and expanded to become a representative of gun companies and related interest groups. Therefore, the NRA is not truly protecting the rights of the American people, but protecting the rights of interest groups and suppressing the US gun control campaign.

The casual sale of guns to civilians in the United States has caused a lot of social problems, not only for the Americans, but also for the Mexicans. Mexican drug dealers can purchase US civilian guns through agents and then smuggled them back to Mexico. After Mexico’s military police seized weapons from drug traffickers, most of these weapons were found to be produced in the US (Wood 2). Today, these security problems have even spread further into South America and Southeast Asia. Without proper regulation and tighter gun control, societies outside the US are suffering from the consequences.

Nowadays, more than 300 million guns have been sold are scattered throughout the United States. If the authority wants to completely ban citizens from holding guns, it can only be theoretically achieved. However, it is difficult to achieve that everyone is required to surrender their own guns. Because even if it was enforced, only the law-abiding citizens would be willing to turn their guns in. It is impossible for those who want to use guns to commit crimes to hand over their criminal tools. If this happens, it will be catastrophic to the American society. Besides, there have been cases of successful self-defense with guns in the United States. Therefore, gun control is the most practical solution to the gun violence problem in the US, not more guns for everyone. In addition to improved and stricter application system, technology may also be used to make guns that can only be used exclusively by the owners.
